Essential optical principles every photographer should understand.
Exposure is governed by three interconnected variables: Aperture (light volume), Shutter Speed (light duration), and ISO (signal amplification). If you decrease one stop of light by stopping down your aperture (e.g. f/2.8 to f/4.0), you must add one stop via slower shutter speed or higher ISO to preserve identical image brightness.
On a bright, unshaded sunny day, set your aperture to f/16 and your shutter speed to the reciprocal of your ISO value. For example, at ISO 100, your shutter speed should be 1/100s (or 1/125s) at f/16. From this baseline, open up 1 stop to f/11 for slight haze, 2 stops to f/8 for overcast, or 3 stops to f/5.6 for heavy shade.
To prevent image softness caused by natural hand tremors when shooting without a tripod, your minimum handheld shutter speed should equal or exceed 1 divided by your focal length (on a 35mm full frame sensor). For a 200mm telephoto lens, shoot at 1/200s or faster. For crop sensors, multiply by the crop factor first.
