Understanding the Photography Exposure Triangle & EV

Exposure in photography is the total amount of light that reaches your camera's image sensor during the creation of a photograph. Getting the exposure right is both a technical requirement for crisp, clean images and a fundamental creative decision.

The Three Pillars of Camera Exposure

1. Aperture (f-stop)

The size of the lens iris opening. Wider apertures (smaller f-numbers like f/1.4 or f/2.8) let in massive light and yield creamy background blur (shallow depth of field). Narrow apertures (f/8 to f/16) maximize scene sharpness from foreground to horizon.

2. Shutter Speed (Exposure Time)

How long the camera shutter remains open. Fast speeds (1/1000s or 1/4000s) freeze high-speed wildlife and sports action. Slow shutter speeds (1/2s to 30s) blur waterfalls and create light trails.

3. ISO Sensitivity

The electronic signal gain of the camera sensor. Base ISO 100 provides maximum dynamic range and zero grain. Higher ISOs (3200, 6400+) allow shooting in low light at the cost of digital luminance noise.

The Sunny 16 rule is a classic guideline that states: on a clear, bright sunny day, set your aperture to f/16 and your shutter speed to the reciprocal of your ISO. For example, at ISO 100, use 1/100s at f/16. This yields EV 15.
An ND8 filter reduces incoming light by 3 stops (since 2³ = 8). It allows 1/8th of the light to pass through, letting you extend your shutter speed by a factor of 8 (e.g. from 1/60s to 1/8s) without overexposing.
In-Body Image Stabilization (IBIS) mechanically compensates for handheld micro-movements. A camera with 5 stops of stabilization allows you to shoot handheld at shutter speeds 32 times slower (2⁵ = 32) than the traditional reciprocal rule without handshake blur.
Due to Earth's rotation, stars will begin to streak into trails if your shutter speed is too long. The 500 Rule calculates the maximum exposure time before trails become visible: 500 / (Focal Length × Crop Factor) seconds. For a 24mm lens on a full-frame sensor, the max exposure is 500 / 24 ≈ 20.8 seconds.
