The X-Sync speed is the highest shutter speed where the mechanical focal-plane shutter is 100% open at the instant the flash fires. Exceeding this speed without HSS causes the second shutter curtain to clip the flash, leaving a black bar across your photograph.

Mastering flash photography requires understanding the core optical relationship between Guide Number (GN), f-number (aperture), and distance. Unlike ambient light, flash exposure is governed almost entirely by aperture and flash duration, while shutter speed controls the ambient background.

The Fundamental Guide Number Formula

Guide Number (GN) = Aperture (f-number) × Flash-to-Subject Distance
Distance = GN / Aperture
Aperture = GN / Distance

If your speedlight has a Guide Number of 60 meters at ISO 100, and your subject is 15 meters away, the required lens aperture is:
Aperture = 60 / 15 = f/4.0.

How Camera ISO Boosts Flash Power

Increasing your camera ISO amplifies sensor sensitivity, which dramatically extends flash range. Because exposure follows the inverse square law, Guide Number scales with the square root of ISO:

GN_new = GN_base × √(ISO_new / ISO_base)

Going from ISO 100 to ISO 400 multiplies your Guide Number by √4 = 2.0×. A GN 60 flash becomes an effective GN 120 flash, doubling your maximum reach or allowing you to shoot at 1/4 flash power for lightning-fast recycle times!

Understanding the Inverse Square Law in Portraits

Light drops off by the square of distance (1/D²). When you double the distance from flash to subject, light falls by 2 full stops (75% loss). In studio portraits, placing a softbox close to your subject creates rapid falloff (a dark background), while moving the light further back creates slow, even falloff across both subject and backdrop.

Frequently Asked Questions

TTL (Through-The-Lens) fires a pre-flash and uses your camera's metering sensor to automatically calculate output. Manual mode gives you 100% consistent control by letting you select fixed fractions (1/1 to 1/128), preventing shot-to-shot exposure fluctuations.
Focal plane shutters consist of two moving curtains. The sync speed (usually 1/200s or 1/250s) is the fastest shutter speed where the first curtain is completely open before the second curtain starts closing. At faster speeds, the sensor is never fully exposed at once; firing a standard flash records the physical shadow of the shutter curtain as a dark band.
