Color grading and chromatic balance are central to visual storytelling in professional photography. Understanding how camera sensors capture light, how algorithms convert RGB into printing CMYK and perceptual CIE-L*a*b*, and how Kelvin temperature governs white balance allows you to achieve stunning images that reproduce consistently across screens, gallery prints, and commercial campaigns.
1. Color Spaces: RGB, HSL, CMYK & CIE-L*a*b*
Different color spaces serve distinct stages of the photographic pipeline:
- sRGB & Adobe RGB (Additive RGB): Built on additive light primaries (Red, Green, Blue). Values range from 0 to 255 per channel (24-bit TrueColor = 16.7 million colors).
- HSL (Hue, Saturation, Lightness): A cylindrical coordinate representation of RGB. Hue (0° to 360°) defines color angle, Saturation (0-100%) defines purity, and Lightness (0-100%) controls luminosity. Essential for intuitive Lightroom/Photoshop HSL panel adjustments.

- Complementary (180°): Two colors directly opposite each other on the color wheel (e.g. Orange & Teal, Golden Sun & Blue Ocean). Delivers maximum visual pop and dynamic range.
- Analogous (±30°): Adjacent neighbors on the color wheel (e.g. Yellow, Amber, Red-Orange in autumn foliage). Produces a tranquil, unified, and organic atmosphere.
- Triadic (120°): Three evenly spaced points forming an equilateral triangle. Offers balanced vibrancy without aggressive clashing.
4. Skin Tone Melanin Pigmentation & Grading
Human skin tones—regardless of global ethnicity—share a very narrow chromatic hue angle along the photographic "Skin Tone Line" (lying in the orange-red spectrum at approximately 20° to 30° Hue, with $Cb$ and $Cr$ vectors tightly constrained).
