Digital image files carry critical spatial, tonal, and colorimetric data. Understanding pixel dimensions, color depth, alpha channels, and print resolution ensures your visual assets reproduce flawlessly across print media, mobile displays, and web platforms.

1. Calculating Image Megapixels & Aspect Ratios

Image resolution is defined by the total count of discrete color sensors or raster pixels across width and height:

Total Pixels = Pixel Width × Pixel Height
Megapixels (MP) = Total Pixels / 1,000,000
Aspect Ratio = Width / Height (Simplified using Greatest Common Divisor GCD)
Diagonal Pixels = √(Width² + Height²)

For example, a standard 24MP full-frame image measuring 6,000 × 4,000 pixels has an aspect ratio of 3:2 (1.50), exactly matching classic 35mm film.

A digital image does not possess physical inches or centimeters until assigned a print resolution (DPI/PPI):
