How 2D Calibration Works
A digital camera captures real-world objects onto a sensor array represented as discrete pixels. Because distance from the lens alters pixel density, establishing scale requires a known physical reference object placed within the same plane of focus. Standard reference items include:
Standard ISO/IEC 7810 ID-1 Credit Cards: Standardized globally to exactly 85.60 mm × 53.98 mm (3.370 in × 2.125 in).
Coins: US Quarters measure 24.26 mm; 1 Euro coins measure 23.25 mm.
Standard Metric or Imperial Rulers: Marked with high-contrast graduation ticks.
3-Point Angle Protractor: Computed via the vector dot product $\cos(\theta) = \frac{\mathbf{u} \cdot \mathbf{v}}{\|\mathbf{u}\| \|\mathbf{v}\|}$.
To achieve maximum accuracy, position your camera sensor completely parallel (perpendicular) to the measurement plane. Avoid wide-angle fish-eye lenses, and place your reference calibration card directly adjacent to the object being measured.
